Help! How Do I Convince My Wife I Need a New Lens?

Here's the situation. I need to buy a new Canon 100-400mm Lens with image stabilization. It will be such a great addition to my camera bag. I will be able to expand my photographic skills and options with this new lens beyond even my wildest dreams. I have seen the evidence online. But I need to be able to convince my wife that this is a good thing to do. She thinks I am "fine just the way you are." Are you feelin' my pain?

The way I see it, the problem is that we (men, that is) don't see things the same way that most women do. Especially when it comes to upgrading photography equipment.

For us men, there is a definite advantage to upgrading. We look at examples of photos online by others and tell ourselves that if we just had that camera, or that lens we could take the same quality photo. Of course, we need to be able to tell our friends and co-workers that we just got the newest "this or that".

Your wife doesn't buy that logic either, does she? Nope, women are blind to the wonders of advancing photographic technology. Most are oblivious to barrel distortion, overall pixel sharpness, and image stabilization technology. And no manner of explanation seems to get through to them.

But take heart, perhaps there is a way. Our logic is all messed up. Instead of trying to get women to think our way, we should be trying to think their way.

Here's an example of what I'm suggesting. My wife loves family photos. The more the better. In fact, I was going through some old ones on the computer last month, trying to delete some of the clutter, and when she saw what I was doing, she got really upset.

She would say, "You can't delete that one, it's so cute." or "No, not that one, so-and-so is in it." As it turned out, she wouldn't let me get rid of any family pictures...NONE.

So, that's when it came to me that men are using the wrong approach. While some wives like our bird pictures, getting a closer shot of a pelican in flight is not important to them. However, if you could get a close-up of the expression on your son's face as he dribbles the soccer ball toward the goal... You see where I'm going with this? That Canon 100-400mm L is practically on it's way to your house.

I started looking at photography forums and found that this strategy actually has worked for others.

Please don't get the wrong idea about this. I am not suggesting that you try to con your wife or make promises that you don't intend to honor. There are just different ways to use your equipment, some of which will excite your wife more than others. The Canon 100-400mm L is an awesome lens for taking kids' sports pictures, or pictures at the dance recital when you are far away. By all means use it for those. But you can also use it for the zoo or the backyard birds.
