Employ Camera Lens Approach for "Final Freedom"

Victor Frankl, author of Man's Search for Meaning, called our ability to choose how we respond to circumstances our "final freedom."

Think about this for a moment. We can respond to the events in our lives in one of three ways: positively, negatively or neutrally. Even in difficult times, when we do not seem to have many or any choices, we still posses this final freedom that allows us to choose how we respond to our circumstances.

That's a good thing to know, and it's a good idea in theory. However, how can we implement this idea in the real world? One way is to get your brain to function like a camera, especially when facing difficult circumstances. Instead of thinking "what do I see?," think in terms of "what would the lens of a camera see if a picture could be taken of this event or these circumstances?"

The camera lens captures only the facts. However, unlike a camera, your brain provides all types of emotional input. When you "see" something, light waves bounce off objects in your environment and are instantaneously converted by your visual sensory organs into the only language the human brain understands, electrical impulses.

These impulses race around the neural pathways in your brain and trigger responses from many different areas, including the parts of your brain associated with memory. This process builds a mental image of what you have observed. Therefore, what you "see" is heavily influenced by your memories, what you want to see, what you fear, other emotions and so forth and so on. That's why three people can see the same thing and respond in three totally different ways: positively, negatively or neutrally.

OK, I've brought up this positive, negative, neutral thing twice now. This is the key to exercising your final freedom. If you accept the premise that you have these three choices, you can pre-decide which choice will help you get the best results in life. My vote is to get in the habit of consistently choosing a positive response, occasionally choosing the neutral response and eliminate or minimize negative responses.

Think of this as a two-step process. When you encounter difficult circumstances, ask yourself:

What would a camera lens see?

Is there any possible way to respond positively to this event or these circumstances? If all else fails, you can always default to the "what can I learn from this and what will I do differently next time?" response. Enjoy your final freedom. Develop it and it will serve you well.

Basic Digital Camera Accessories - Filters Made For Digital Cameras

As any one who owns a digital single lens reflex camera will attest lenses can be quite an investment. Lenses that are optimized for digital project an image onto the camera sensor with high contrast, good color and sharp focus. As photographers we really do get a lot for our money when we purchase a lens. So why do we then install a regular old filter instead of one made to match the lenses optical quality?

I mentioned digitally optimized lenses before, but just what does that mean? While these lenses have several features that make them especially well suited to digital photography one of the main benefits lies in the coatings applied to the glass of the lens. Standard lenses have coating applied to almost every internal and external surface yet they tend to only have an anti-reflective coating on the exterior surface of the front element only. Digital lenses have the anti-reflective coating applied to all surfaces of the glass and this is a key component.

The image sensors used inside digital cameras is highly polished and reflective. This isn't a design flaw, it's the only way they can be made in order to achieve sharp and focused images. Unfortunately it's the very reflectivity of the sensor that causes imaging problems.

As light from our subject passes through the camera lens it focuses on the image sensor. But because the sensor is so reflective some of that light bounces back up through the lens. Older lenses or those not digitally optimized lack the anti-reflective coatings on the back sides of the glass elements. The light that has bounced off of the image sensor strikes these uncoated elements and reflects once again back down to the image sensor. This twice reflected light is now out of focus and causes ghosting and loss of contrast in our image.

We can see that if the lens is made with anti-reflective coatings on the backsides of the elements that we can eliminate a significant source of image ruining stray light. The same principle applies to lens filters. It's difficult to find a filter without coatings; all of them in fact are coated in one way or another. However like the lenses just discussed standard filters lack the coatings on the backside of their glass.

Filters optimized for digital cameras have anti-reflective coatings on the back side of the glass element. Our digital lenses do a great job of not bouncing back reflected light to our camera's sensor, filters made for digital complete the job and allow the camera to capture the very best image.

Experiment With Your Camera

There is an ancient Chinese proverb that goes something along the lines of, "I hear and I forget, I read and I remember, I do and I understand." Wiser words could not have been said when concerning photography and our equipment. We are inundated with magazines, books, and DVDs showing us exactly how to do something and its effect on our photographs but how many of us actually go out there and set up our own experiments?

We might try a few different f/stops when we are out in the field looking to get just the right depth of field. We may play around with shutter speeds and struggle with the LCD to figure out if we got the motion blur we wanted. And who even knows what, "Second Curtain Synchronization" means? But to actually set up an experiment and check the results? It's a rare person that does such things.

The reason why I am writing this today is to encourage you to get to know your camera (and the physical qualities of photography in general) better. And the best place to start is with your owner's manual. Just start out at page one and as soon as the manual describes a mode or function and its result, recreate their experiment utilizing the environment around you. Take the time to go through the whole manual this way. But don't move on to the next chapter until you completely understand the one you are in. This exercise alone will elevate your photography skills to levels you probably never dreamed of.

The manual for my camera does not go into Depth of Field very deeply at all. The manufacture assumes we understand this and for the most part, most of us do on a superficial level. But there is nothing like setting up an experiment to see exactly how your lenses react at different focal points and aperture settings. The best way to start really understanding depth of field is to start at the nearest focal point the lens can focus to. Place a yard stick perpendicular to the camera/lens with the "1" closest to the camera and the "35" furthest away. With the lens set at its closest focal setting move the yard stick or camera/lens so that "18" is in focus. Your lens is always at its widest opening (narrowest depth of field) for focusing so what you see when you view the scene through the viewfinder is the narrowest you can get with that lens. Now start taking pictures of the yardstick beginning at the widest aperture (f/1.8, f/2.8, etc) and stop down until you achieve the smallest aperture (f/22 or so). You will have to adjust shutter speed to achieve proper exposure for the changes in aperture. Review these captures on your computer to see exactly what happened.

After that try doing it with the lens focused to infinity. You will need a lot more than a yardstick when focused to infinity but a row of houses, a line of cars, or any continuous repeating pattern will work just fine. Repeat the experiment above and review in the computer. Also compare the infinity focus pictures with the pictures taken at the closest focal point and note the difference. You will notice that as you focus out further, the depth of field gets wider. Now try this experiment with a different lens.

After you have tested all of your lenses for depth of field and understand the effect on your particular camera kit, move on to experimenting with shutter speeds. The best way I find to do this is to sit on the side of the road and start taking pictures of cars passing by. Use a normal lens and start out at about 1/25sec and shoot each shutter setting up to around 1/500sec (this will depend on the speed of the cars). Download your captures to the computer and review the findings. Once you see that the cars are stopped, start looking at the tires to see if they are frozen. You can further refine this experiment with kids on bikes provide they will cooperate. Another place to try this experiment is at running/jogging events most communities have throughout the year. You won't need to go anywhere near 1/500sec though.

After you do these two experiments, new experiments will come to mind naturally through your photography. Don't miss an opportunity to do a new experiment as you will learn things at a completely different level than by just reading about it. This will also expand your photography capabilities and give you the confidence to say, "Yes, I can do that." Happy shooting!

Digital Cameras: Caring for the Camera Lens

The popularity of a digital camera is due in part to the vivid, life like photographs that it can produce. The lens of a camera is the key to creating these clear, sharp images. However, dust, fingerprints, scratches, and other dirt and smudges can destroy contrast, produce pictures that appear out of focus, and eventually can result in the expense of having to replace the lens, or camera, altogether.

Obviously, proper care can help extend the life of the lens and assure better quality images. Following just a few basic tips can go a long way in assuring a digital camera lens does not fail.

* Avoid contact with the camera lens when possible. Keeping the lens cover on and placing the camera in the bag when not in use can shield it from dust and other potential damage. Basically, anything that comes in contact with the lens of a digital camera can damage the special coatings that allow the lens to function properly. Extra care should be taken when shooting pictures to assure that the lens is not touched as it is grasped in the hands.

* Keep lenses away from excessive heat which can breakdown the greases used within the barrel of the lens.

* Add a UV filter over the camera lens as an extra layer of protection.

* Keep the lens dry. Moisture whether from your breath, condensation, a cleaner or another source can create fogging and, in some case, can warp the lens housing. Because of the potential damage from moisture, care must be taken in exposing your camera to cold as condensation may form when it is returned to a warmer environment.

* Remove visible particles from the lens without touching it when possible. Using an ear syringe or special dust blower is the preferred method. Soft bristled brushes are available as well but care must be taken to assure that the brushes are clean and do not scratch the surface of the camera lens.

* Remove fingerprints and smudges with a dry microfiber cloth. Lens cleaning fluids are available and can also be applied to the microfiber cloth as needed. The fluid should not be applied directly to the lens. Only cleaners made specifically for camera lenses should be used; do not use cleaners made for eyeglasses.

* Use extra care in harsher environments. As described above heat and cold extremes can cause damage to lenses as well as the camera itself. Because cameras travel with us however, they are sometimes exposed to environments that are somewhat "hostile". Thus, extra precautions are sometimes necessary. For instance, in extremely cold weather it is generally best to carry the camera close to the body, perhaps covered by a coat to keep it warmer. On rainy days wrapping the camera in a plastic bag can help shield it from the moisture. The beach can also be hostile due to the potential exposure to wind, sand, moisture, and heat. Again, covering the camera with a plastic bag and shading it from the sun are good preventative measures.

Reducing contact and exposure to contaminants, proper cleaning, and protecting the lens from extreme environments are key to assuring the longevity of a camera lens. These basic precautions entail minimal expense and time commitment and can become second nature very quickly to beginning photographers.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Camera Lens

Purchasing a DSLR or Digital Single Lens Reflex camera comes with a basic kit lens that could give decent quality pictures. But the advantage in DSLR cameras is being able to switch lenses, depending on the type of shot you want. There are powerful zoom lenses or macro lenses, for example.

Here are some factors to consider when buying a digital camera lens:
The Glass
o Focal Length - It is the actual distance in-between the focal lane of the lens and the rear element, measured in millimeters (mm). This is where the light's parallel beams enter the lens converging onto a point. It determines the viewing angle of the lens. When there is a shorter focal length, the field of view becomes wider, providing more scenes for your camera to capture. When you increase the focal length, the actual field of view becomes narrower.

o Aperture - It is one of the mechanisms that control the actual "amount of light" passing through the lens towards the image sensors. It is also referred as "f-stops," like f/2/8. The smaller the number, the larger the opening. This means more light enters the camera. Since it begins to collect additional light, a type of lens that allows you to open to a wider aperture also enables you to have a faster shutter speed. Such feature is essential in low lighting conditions to obtain sharp images, especially through a handheld camera.

o Image Stabilization - Slower shutter speed can result to blurry photos when cameras are handheld. Image stabilization counteracts the shaking, allowing one to shoot certain handheld shots amidst low lighting conditions. Canon's term for this is IS (Image Stabilization). Nikon use the term VR (Vibration Reduction).

Zoom lenses included in a variety of DSLR kits offer focal lengths ranging from 18 to 35mm. Depending on the cropping capability of the camera, it can reach up to 55mm. This means that you can go from only a moderate "wide-angle" view towards a so-called "slight telephoto."

If you have plans of expanding your digital camera's features, here are some things you need to consider:
o Prime Lenses - These should possess a longer type of zoom lens or a lone focal length between 35mm up to 85mm. Prime lenses have a better glass on them.

If you get the "fixed-length lens", there is a tendency that you will be required to move around when getting your shot. Of course, over a certain time, this will already help you make better compositions. Prime lenses also possess a wider type of maximum aperture, making it easier to get sharper shots, especially under low lighting.

o Zoom Lenses - For those wishing to get action photos, the best would be the "telephoto lens" which ranges from 100mm up to 300mm. This is due to the DSLRs crop factor. There is not much zooming needed. A good example would be Nikon D40 which has a 200mm type of telephoto lens that can turn into a 300mm one.

A spy camera is a complicated piece of equipment that's actually quite easy to explain. A camera lens transmits images to a receiver which then broadcasts those images on a TV screen, monitor or even on a personal computer. And while inside each component of your nanny camera is a complex section of wires and circuits, it's those two important units that make your nanny camera what it is. Without them - and without having them function properly, your micro spy nanny cam will simply be a high-tech piece of junk that won't actually do anything that you want it to.

So, we've determined that the camera and the receiver are the most vital components of a spy cam. Let's elaborate on those pieces so that you can enjoy a better understanding of exactly what they do, how they work and how they contribute to enhancing the safety and security of your family, home or business location.

Camera Lens

This is your eye when you can't be there to watch and see for yourself. The camera is the part that actually catches and records everything that happens within its field of vision. The great thing about the camera lens is that they can be incredibly small in size. There are exceptionally small camera lenses - called pinhole lenses - which are literally less than 1" in diameter. With spy cams, it's important to always understand that the camera lens is your window to everything that's going on. Without it, you won't see anything and your nanny camera won't record anything.

That's why pinhole camera lenses are so valuable. You can place them just about anywhere and not have to worry about anyone locating it or detecting it. Remember, the camera lens has to be in some clear location where it can have an unobstructed view. An exceptionally large camera lens will be easily discovered, thus neutralizing the "hidden" aspect of the spy camera. But, a small lens can be placed in any room and nobody will ever know that it's there.

There's one truth to always remember when it comes to spy cameras and the behavior of people: when people know that they are being watched, they will modify their behavior to make themselves appear in a favorable light. When they think they're alone is when their true behavior and intentions come to the forefront. A well hidden camera lens will always capture and record the truth, because nobody will know that it's there.

Receiver

Just as important as the camera lens is the video receiver. When you're super-small pinhole lens is recording video, it's got to send that video information somewhere. That somewhere is the receiver. For a majority of spy cameras and nanny cams, the receiver plug into a standard wall outlet. At the same time, the receiver is also connected to a TV, computer screen or viewing monitor. This allows you to watch the video that your camera is recording - in real time - directly on your television set.

The reason that this part is important is quite obvious actually: without it, you couldn't see what your camera recorded. Many people, when they use a spy camera, they intend to watch the footage that the nanny cam captured while they were away at a later time. Without a reliable, strong receiver, your camera won't be able to transmit any image whatsoever, thus rendering it completely and utterly useless. Having a wide variety of SLR camera lenses is a necessity for a professional photographer. However, choosing a second lens for amateur photographers can be daunting. Three Simple Steps to Warm Up to a Cold Camera Lens

Do you find it easier to talk to people than relate to a camera? Many people are accustomed to seeing that immediate feedback or even a simple nod of understanding from a live audience. An expressionless dark lens, however, is outside the comfort zone for many!

So how can you develop a new zone of comfort and deliver a warm and charisma-filled message directly to a cold, dark lens?

It requires a mind set change. It's easier than you might think!

You can accomplish this in three steps:

Step One: Think about someone that you have helped with your product, or service. Is there a person whose life is changed for the better because of you? Get specific and choose just one individual that made you feel fantastic because the results were so good.

Step Two: Now get really detailed. Remember the exact moment of their breakthrough or their highest moment of happiness. What was it like? Were they grateful? What did they say? Can you see the expression on their face? How did you feel? Try to even remember the environment: what was the color, and temperature of the room? What time of day? Try to recreate that moment in your mind. Got it?

Step Three: That person, or someone just like them, is waiting to have that fantastic moment right now; you cannot see them, but they are there and you can reach them through that tool called a camera. When you look at the lens now, focus on the person you envisioned, not the piece of equipment.

You may need to think of it this way, if there was someone that you knew you could help, but there was a closed door between you, wouldn't you still try to talk through the door? Of course! Think of speaking through the lens, not into it!
